Fyrsta LabVIEW kerfið var sett á markað 1986 og vakti strax afar mikla athygli. Í fyrsta sinn kom á markaðinn hugbúnaður, sem gerði tæknimanni kleift að hanna, forrita og setja upp mælikerfi á 1 degi.

Nýjasta útgáfan af LabVIEW , eða LabVIEW 2010 kom út í ágúst 2010 og er það til fyrir 32 og 64 bita stýrikerfi.

LabVIEW er eina forritunarmálið, sem forritað er á myndrænan hátt. Það gerir forritun hraðvirka og hnitmiðaða. Í fjölda prófana hafa lausnir í LabVIEW unnist á helmingi skemmri tíma en lausnir gerðar með öðrum hugbúnaði. Með LabVIEW má gera skjákerfi fyrir reglun, keyrslu á vélmennum, tölvukerfi með sjón, hugbúnaðarkerfi sem tengjast Internetinu, og skiptast á upplýsingum við önnur forrit. Með OPC (Ole for Process Control) má tengjast stýrivélum. Tengjast má gagnagrunnum og senda upplýsingar um Ethernet. LabVIEW er afar gott alhliða forrit til hugbúnaðargerðar.
